Why do I have these stupid looking teeth? Only weird Africans have a gap between their front teeth. It makes me look like a walking joke every time I open my mouth. Why is my hair so kinky? Nobody looks like me, and nobody wants to be my friend. This is the story of a loner who endured incessant psychological and physical battering about his race and appearance. “You have no friends. You’re not cool. You’re ugly! Shut Up!"

Drew's experience of intense racial bullying in elite Baltimore area private schools as a child has driven him to become a prominent anti-bullying advocate. His memoir SHUT UP! Nobody Likes You, describes what he endured and the value of compassion.

"Once I picked this up and started to read, I did not want to put it down. This is a harrowing and sometimes brutal account of how one boy, half black and half white, grew up in an atmosphere of racial bullying in an elite private school in Maryland. Sadly, the young man was also rejected by his mother's white family, who were deeply hostile to him and his Nigerian father. This is a must read for anyone who believes we live in a society where race doesn't matter or that affluent communities are free of racism."

Reviews

“I just finished this well-written and compelling, albeit horrifying, book about racism, by a young man who spent all his years growing up being judged for being interracial. Nobody should have to endure what Drew has endured. He says that this has given him resilience and strength. I hope these traits will carry him well through the rest of his life. This should be required reading in high school to develop awareness of the problems of bullying and racism.”

“An intense story about a young boy's encounters as he struggles to grow into adulthood. Many will be able to empathize with his plight as they read along. A must include book for middle school and high school libraries. LOVED IT!!! B.White retired educator”
